This is a brief, general explanation of some terms you might encounter in this library's file descriptions.  America Online and the Macintosh Communications Forum ask you to honor the rights that authors reserve, if any.  Please, in all cases see the author's own statement contained in their documentation.

  31. Public Domain:  a term for software whose author's rights have been forfeited so it may exist in the public domain.  The program is free for every one to use in any way that they see fit.

Keyware:  software whose features are limited, as in a demo version, or a program which will cease to function after a set amount of use or time.  Typically, in exchange for payment the author will give you a "key" (password, serial number, etc.) which, when entered into the software will allow all its features to be used.

Shareware:  software that is distributed with the understanding that, if you find it useful, you'll send money to the author of the program.  By sending money and registering with the author you may be given preferential treatment on updates and revisions.  These authors usually allow you to share the program with others as long as they understand the author's terms.

  37. Freeware:  software which can be freely distributed, used, and shared.  Typically, the author restricts you from selling the software for profit. Freeware does not necessarily mean that the author has released the software to the public domain.

  39. Happyware, Postcardware, Beerware, and so on:  Mostly variations on the shareware and freeware themes.  Please read the author's documentation to find out what rights they claim to their software in these cases
